I need help with trying to see if any banks issued currency in Monroeville, Alabama. I have searched but have not been able to find anything. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Marc and welcome.

There are no obsolete notes listed in Haxby. This does not preclude there being scrip issued by companies or savings banks in Monroeville, Alabama

Marc,

I did find that the First National Bank of Monroeville, AL issued both large and small national bank notes. Kelly shows about 3 large and 9 small nationals from this bank.

Since nationals are not a purview of this forum, you might want to join the the Collectors Universe at http://forums.collectors.com/categories.cfm?catid=23 Nationals are discussed often in this forum.

A large national from this bank is shown here: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=588018&STARTPAGE=6

A small national is here: http://currency.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=338&Lot_No=19625. The heritage archives are invaluable.

According to the town's magazine (published by the chamber of commerce), the town was incorporated in 1899, which might explain why there were no obsolete notes from the town. The same source states that the town was the county seat for Monroe county in 1832, so it was apparently around in some pre-incorporation status before 1899.

You might consider checking with the CoC and see if they have records of banks operating in Monroeville from 1832 to 1865.

Hello Greg And Bernie,

Bernie thanks for the welcome, I appreciate it.

The reason I am looking for info on Monroeville, AL that is where my wife is from. I have been to the banks there, museum, estate sales, everywhere it seems like. I just cannot find a note anywhere. It seems to me this will be one of those waiting games to find one, and then suddenly, I will find one when I least expect it.

Now I have two towns that I am on the look out for obsoletes.

Rodney, Mississippi and Monroeville, Alabama.

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it.

Marc

Rosene doesn't list anything either.

If you can't find something from your town, I would try getting a note that would have circulated there, for instance a Confederate note issued in Montgomery, a Mobile obsolete from a big bank, etc. If Monroeville is a must, try searching for tokens issued by local merchants. There is always a way to find money or pseudo specie from a location. If I find anything I'll post it here.
