There are several notes from Ohio and at least one series from New York which are allegedly altered from the "Bank of Vernon, TX." This information goes all the way back to counterfeit detectors published in 1841 and has been dutifully copied by authors (myself included) ever since.

There are problems: First, Vernon, Texas, was not in existence until much later. Second, for a bank whose notes were fairly widely used as source material for alterations, no one's ever seen an original Bank of Vernon, TX note. That's somewhat unusual. I have several alterations from Ohio and one from New York on the Bank of Vernon which I consider a first level alteration since the only thing added or changed was the state name, "New York." The Ohio notes are second level alterations since both the bank name and state name have been changed.

I have a simple question: Have you ever seen a note from the Bank of Vernon, Texas (pre altered state)? None of the veteran dealers and Texas collectors have. I would love to solve this mystery.

Hey Wendell, welcome aboard.

I haven't seen any, but I haven't been looking, either. If I get a chance I might look around for a historical society in the area, and see if they know anything about the Bank; we might at least get confimation of dates that way.
